Debian 13 "Trixie" Freeze Begins: What to Expect in the Next Stable Release

The Debian Release Team has announced the soft freeze for Debian 13 "Trixie," the next stable release expected in mid-2026.

What's Included

  • GNOME 47 — With accent colors, improved file manager, and better Wayland support
  • KDE Plasma 6.2 — Full Wayland-first desktop with floating panels and tiling support
  • Linux Kernel 6.12 LTS — With PREEMPT_RT for real-time capabilities
  • systemd 256 — With improved boot performance and new service features
  • GCC 14 — Default compiler with improved C23 and C++26 support

Non-Free Firmware

Following Debian 12's precedent, Trixie will include non-free firmware in official installation images, making it easier to install on modern hardware with WiFi and GPU drivers.

64-bit Time

Debian 13 on 32-bit architectures completes the transition to 64-bit time_t, preventing the Year 2038 problem for 32-bit installations.

The hard freeze is expected in April 2026, with the release scheduled for June-July 2026. Developers are encouraged to fix release-critical bugs during the freeze period.
