MongoDB 8.0 GA: Queryable Encryption Range Queries and 60% Write Throughput Gain

MongoDB has announced the GA release of MongoDB 8.0, focused heavily on performance and expanding the capabilities of Queryable Encryption.

Range Queries on Encrypted Fields

Queryable Encryption, introduced in 7.0 for equality queries, now supports range queries ($gt, $gte, $lt, $lte) on numeric and date fields. Sensitive data like salaries, timestamps, and measurements can remain encrypted on disk and in memory while still being queryable efficiently.

Replica Set Write Performance

A rewritten oplog application pipeline delivers 60% higher sustained write throughput on secondary nodes, reducing replication lag on write-heavy workloads. Primary throughput is up 15-25% depending on write concern.

Time-Series Aggregations

New $bottomN, $topN, and $percentile operators run efficiently on time-series collections with bucketing-aware optimizations. Downsampling workloads that previously required external tools can stay in-database.
